Hanau pseudo mark - unidentified

Hello All,

I'm looking to identify this mark, it is on a typical Hanau type repousse sugar and creamer of average quality.

Many thanks,
A in A

Re: Unknown purpose

In English, the form is termed a cauldron, most notable use was made by the three witches of Macbeth. "Double, double toil and trouble, fire burn and cauldron bubble... etc. etc." Sir Christopher Dresser designed a tea set in a cauldron motif ca.1880, believe this may be the sugar bowl her...

Hello again, I've just taken the mark and played around a bit with it in a photo program. Changing its angle to put the animal into a rampant position proves my assumption wrong, it is clearly meant to be running, not rearing. This eliminates Darmstadt, perhaps it is Schwäbisch Gmünd or even possi...

Hello Theoderich, Thanks for responding. I've tried, but can't see any similarity to the unicorn mark. The closest I have found is Darmstadt, assuming the mark, as shown, is tilted and the animal is in a rampant position. Its most distinctive attribute is the curl of the tail, it is curled inward to...

Cheers,

Its almost this and almost that, but I can't quite put my finger on exactly what town this may be. Look forward to any suggestions.

German, believe the piece is circa 1820. Initials look to be FCB. Any help appreciated.

Dear Miles, I count myself lucky to live in an age where there is a newfound respect for items of the past and a general desire to preserve them. In our time bulldozers stop work on the foundations for an office block to allow archeologists to come in with their toothbrushes, and even archeologists ...

Miles, From the email you have quoted it is obvious that, while they may have been patient and courteous, they most certainly did not practice due diligence before acting. I've now read the law a number of times and can see why; apparently there is no call to establish what a piece is before defacin...

I must say that I am appalled at the handling of this by the Birmingham Assay Office. Both the mark defacement and methodology used to arrive at the conclusion that it must be done were unnecessarily slipshod and crude. If the law dictates that it is their right and responsibility to alter the marks...

Mark on Russian fork

Interesting mark that I have not seen before. It was found on a Russian piece of flatware dating to circa 1900. The item was also stamped with regular Russian assay and makers mark, but this mark was stamped well away from them, as if added later or as an import mark from another country. It appears...

Mike, Apologies for the poor mark image, appearances aside, the center symbol is not an ampersand, it is a capital "F" and slightly larger than the R and B that flank it. My sense is that the larger font indicates that it is the surname initial for a name along the lines of "Robert Be...

Hello All, Thank you for the responses and do hope that someone can ID the maker. I'm sure it is English and must concur with Mike about the marks, there are all sorts of exemptions to British hallmarking rules on gold and silver, leaving assay up to the discretion of the maker. Tardy alone lists 2 ...

Hello,
Looking to discover the maker of this gold and turquoise pin. Maker's mark is RFB and it is also marked 9CT. Assuming it is English circa 1910 by the gold standard and style. Many thanks for any assistance.

augsburg stick 18th cent

Greetings, Found this rococco candlestick recently. I know it is from Augsburg and circa 1760 or 70. I'm hoping someone can identify the SB maker's mark and possibly pin down the V date letter with exactitude. Many thanks, AinA http://x2.putfile.com/11/31912091113.jpg http://x2.putfile.com/11/319121...

Acid testing on silver is not very reliable and always damages the piece.
Just for a laugh, try silver testing acid on:
iron
pewter
lead
steel
Any of these can and have been silverplated. You already found the results of acid testing on silverplated Britannia metal.
