I think it may be MS.

I would not assume that this is not sterling. It probably is and the stones are faux opal, which is glass and foil. This eagle or condor head is a legitimate silver mark, but I cannot remember who it belongs to. I've come across before on pieces I would estimate are at least 1940's and perhaps older.

RJA is one of the marks used on Rancho Alegre silver. Miguel Garcia Martinez was the primary designer at Rancho Alegre, but RJA is mentioned as another artisan there.

Actually, there is another artist for Eagle 38, LHM.

The Eagle assay mark was introduced in 1948. (See Hougart's book, p. 10).

Is there any way you could get a photo closer up? I cannot see this one at all. However, Serafin Moctezuma's mark is often confused for William Spratling. Turn it over and look. You can see his and other marks in Billie Hougart's book, "The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade Hallmarks".

MOC is mentioned in Billie Hougart's book as an artist from Iguala, Mex, which is a small town close to Taxco. The mark also says "Plata 925, Mexico, Iguala, Gro."(Gro is for the state of Guerrero). Artemio Navarrete was a master silversmith from Iguala who moved to Taxco to supervise Las ...

This is not Pineda's crown, but could be attributed Plata Real which oftentimes used a crown with their mark. Billie Hougart only mentions three entries for Eagle 38 and Antonio Pineda with Los Castillo are two of them. The other is Miguel Garcia Martinez who was main designer for Rancho Alegre.

Can anyone help me identify this mushroom mark with an "E" inside? It is on a malachite brooch and also is stamped "sterling". Any info on the maker and time period would be much appreciated. I'm new to the forum, and am having trouble uploading photos??? http://i831.photobucket....

I disagree with the previous comment. Mexican silver from this era (circa 1940's-'50's) is usually sterling if marked 925. You can test to be sure, but most I have dealt with are valid sterling. Some jewelry from this era are even higher grades. Hope this helps.

I believe this is a Peruvian piece.

I can clearly see "HECHO EN MEXICO" around "FARFAN" in the center. FarFan was a well-known silver manufacturer in Mexico City during Wm. Spratling's lifetime. I'm not sure if they are still in business.
