Re: Old Sheffield Plate planter?

Dognose, I was so excited when I saw you replied, and then my heart sank: the picture of the marks is clearer and more discernible than one can accomplish even in person with a loupe. My sister took the picture with an iPhone 8, and I was surprised it revealed so much detail. I don't think anyone co...

Old Sheffield Plate planter?

I have what I think is an Old Sheffield Plate planter. https://i.postimg.cc/dQWLb3w0/s-l1600-2019-07-01-T201051-175.jpg It's 7" tall by 9" long by 6 and 7/8" wide. The marks are just below the top rim. The marks look like close-plating marks on early candle snuffers/wick trimmers. htt...

Re: ?Tallinn/Estonia? 900 candlesticks

Thanks, Francais - the mark on your spoons definitely looks the same as the mark on my candlesticks. Do you get a feeling about the age of your spoons? The monogram is quite lovely and looks old.

Nilchen's pic links no longer go to pictures of antique silver; in fact, the pictures are quite inappropriate!

Re: Göteborg, Sweden fish server (IMS maker)

There is quite an interesting postscript to this thread: a Scandinavian fish slice collector wrote an article for the July/August issue of Silver Magazine with photos of his collection, and included in his collection was an IDENTICAL fish slice, even down to the same strange inscription and the miss...

Re: Need some help with silver marks

Thanks for the pics, AG2012. I am still working on the pics of the marks on my tray, but I had it spectrometer tested extensively this week with a $20,000 spectrometer, and it is good 800 silver, so that's one concern put to bed. The goldshop owner was salivating to melt it b/c it's so freakishly he...

Re: Need some help with silver marks

2 follow-up questions: is a tray bearing the Sandrik rose and "800" in a rectangle and the fleur-de-lis without a conjoined C (like the marks pictured at the top of this query) a piece made 1942-1945, or is it a tray made even decades earlier that was just imported into the Protectorate be...

Re: Frankfurt sauceboat on stand?

I am certain the silversmith you named is the correct one, Oel, because I was able to find a nearly identical piece online that was described as follows: "A Dutch silver brazier Indistinct mark of Johannes Adrianus van der Toorn, The Hague, 1815 Navette-shaped, on oval wood base with four cylin...

Re: Frankfurt sauceboat on stand?

In the May/June 2013 issue of Silver Magazine in an article titled, "Silver from Amsterdam Crafted by Members of the Helweg Dynasty of Silversmiths," shared by Rowland L. Matteson, pages 12-15, I found two interesting statements that to some degree add a basis for understanding the histori...

Qrt.S and Hose_dk, you guys are amazing. With the name you provided, I did some Googling, and I found the following very similar "BÄGARE, silver, Erik Lemon (Lemoine), Uppsala, 1793." (admin edit - see Posting Requirements ) http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q168/okchris67/swedishcompara...

Re: 1789 Swedish beaker by maker EL

1. Yes, Hose_dk, I think the Uppsala city mark is definitely what is on the cup; in fact, on page 381 of Tardy's , there is a very similar city mark in a rectangle for Uppsala in the early 19th century, so with this cup being late 18th century, I think it's certainly compatible with the form in that...

1789 Swedish beaker by maker EL

This 42 gram beaker stands 3.5 inches tall and is 2.75 inches in diameter across the top. It bears a Swedish date code for 1789 and a maker's mark of EL; I realize that maker mark is hard to see from the pic, but I assure you the last letter is an "L" I have 4 questions: 1. Who is the make...

Does anyone have a copy of Poinçons d’Argenterie Belges by R. Stuyck? Is the style of my flatware Second Empire, circa 1869? Here are the pics again in the order they were in the original post: http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q168/okchris67/belgianflatware1.jpg http://i136.photobucket.com/albums...

Re: Mystery item

There is no dispute that the shape is VERY obviously inspired by an ancient oil lamp, the type used not only in Greece but in Israel and all over the ancient world, but have you seen a Victorian-or-slightly-later-era cigar lighter, for instance? I own a British sterling example from Edwardian times ...

Re: Mystery item

Okay, my friend thinks I'll embarrass myself, but this looks for all the world like a neti pot, which is an ancient Ayurvedic technique for washing the sinuses. Solid silver is antiseptic, so having a silver one is genius, as there have been several deaths in the USA news recently from using tapwate...

Belgian / Belgium 19th c flatware - Brussels??

I recently acquired 6 spoons and 6 forks, which together weigh approximately 470 grams: http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q168/okchris67/belgianflatware1.jpg I believe the 800M mark, which is on all 12 pieces, is from Belgium, post 1869. Additionally, all 12 pieces have the French swan import mark,...

Re: Salt pepper cruet set BRITISH - Help

Nenad, I agree with Dognose, you need pictures of the object and the hallmarks on it that pop up when we view this query, but EPN stands for electroplated nickel, and "CJA...Made in England" is probably the silverplate maker Charles J. Allen, of Sheffield, England, the 6th listing from the...

Re: Odd primitive container with rattles

Cheryl, that's wonderful to know! I am appreciative, as always. Do you have a feeling for age? Is it an antique or a reproduction-type item? I've really gotten into Indian/Nepalese miniature paintings lately, so I guess I have my radar set for stuff from that part of the world now, and it's influenc...
