Re: Irish Ale Tankard - need help with Hallmarks

I could be wrong but I believe weights were scratched on by the assay office before being returned for final finishing so will not provide clues as to the maker. Joseph Walker (1690-1722) with the looped W in his mark (very similar to Edward Workman's looped W) is another possible maker of this tank...

Re: Irish Ale Tankard - need help with Hallmarks

Definitely 1715. Well spotted Aguest.

This is an Irish silver spoon tray 1715. Harp is identical including the dot in the human figure and the two holes in the sound box. Date letter clearly correct too.

Can't see any letters or Harps similar in this date sequence pre 1730 either.

Re: Irish Ale Tankard - need help with Hallmarks

Be interesting to weigh this tankard and see how it compares to the 5.80 troy ounces marked on the base.

Re: Irish Ale Tankard - need help with Hallmarks

Puzzling hallmarks. The closest approximation to the date letter is the Y of 1745 as Phil said (and only an approximation) but the harp is incorrect for that date or close to that date. In fact it's puzzling that this tankard has a date mark at all as when Hibernia was introduced in 1730, the date l...

Re: No Makers Mark, what to make of other hallmarks

I doubt anyone can really explain why this piece is missing a maker's mark. Some pieces just did not get fully hallmarked.

Re: No Makers Mark, what to make of other hallmarks

That is certainly not unheard of. I've come across a number of silver items missing a maker's mark or date mark for example, some in the early 1800s. Just looking at a web page now of a small silver tureen dated 1809 with no maker's mark. You'll likley find more doing a search.

Re: No Makers Mark, what to make of other hallmarks

The hallmarks are for Dublin 1823.

The Hibernia mark in an engrailed shield from previous cycle is known to have been used for the date letters A to D in this cycle as well as in an oval.

Re: DUblin mark 1806 ?

My error. Isaac would have been about 90 in 1808 if apprenticed at 14. So maybe Jeremiah used same mark or is as Trev said.

Re: DUblin mark 1806 ?

Interesting. GIven the date, 1808, one would assume it was Jeremiah D'OLier but seems to be the mark used by Isaac D'Olier (2) & (3) if you refer to Trev's detailed explanation of the D'OLier family here: https://www.925-1000.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=8565&p=38800&hilit=d%27olie...

Re: help determine the year of the spoon

While some references list Christopher Skinner as working between 1739-1765, Douglas Bennett lists him as 1736-1780 in both his reference books. We know Bennett used all available Dublin street directories and if you check Wilson's Dublin Street Directory 1780, you'll see Christopher Skinner, Goldsm...

Re: Snuff box - maker I.E

Hi Kert,

I exhausted all research channels and I haven't seen any additional boxes with I.E.

I doubt is Ebbs for the reasons stated above. Please post photos of your box including mark, and then we can have a look.

Re: John Cullum - John Cullen - Limerick

As mentioned in my previous PM, A Collection of Limerick Silver states it is probable that the John Cullen, Ballsbridge, Limerick, shown as registering with Dublin in 1784 is actually John Cullum, Baal's Bridge, Limerick. To me, neither the Sterling mark or the double drop on this spoon seem indicat...

Re: George Moore?

Reference books, i.e, Bennett's 'Collecting Irish Silver' and Bowen & O'Brien's 'A Celebration of Limerick Silver' only show show G.M in a wavy rectangle. Jackson's shows this mark too but also GM (without pellet) in a different wavy rectangle with the comment 'noted by Jackson' but I've never c...

Correction: My text should read James Kenzie not John Kenzie. The IK mark shown for him is similar to that shown as used by Kelly & Kavanagh.
