Re: Silver Cross 1898?

HI and welcome to the forum.

You are completely correct with your identification of assay office, date and maker. Chester punches are seen to vary in shape, no doubt following a rule which I have not yet been able to decode.

Re: Marks on an antique military whistle chain

That "p" is the Birmingham date letter used on items below the dutiable limit for the assay year 1889/90. I suspect the clip is the only silver part as I would expect each chain link to have a lion passant and each part of the whistle to be hallmarked with at least a partial mark.

Re: Help identifying hallmarks - flatware

M&Co is clearly an Edinburgh company but the mark doesn't seem to be illustrated in any of my normal go-to sites. A1 is conventionally used to denote the manufacturer's best quality plating but there is no agreed standard so all that can be said is that it's better than second quality.

Re: Edinbrough hallmarks but American maker’s mark B.Pitman

I am not convinced that the "Edinburgh" marks are OK as there appear to be some inconsistencies in the punch outline shapes. There are also problems with the lack of a date mark and the lumpy duty mark lacking any detail. However if they are genuine they would date from around 1810 which i...

Re: What is the purpose of this Cooper Bros & Son Set?

A butter knife and preserve spoon to my way of thinking. Interesting that it has an Irish retailer's label and a Dublin import mark so that means that the decoration is probably a shamrock leaf.

Re: Please help me identify this Sterling Tea Service

You were right with Martin, Hall & Co (MH over &Co), but wrong about sterling. The gothic-style letters are EPGS for electroplated German silver, German silver being an old name for the base metal alloy now known as nickel silver.

Most likely an Exeter mark with the maker's mark of Joseph HIcks.

Not sure what has happened to make the S look like a G but I suspect it's overstamped on something ending with G.

Re: spoon sterling?

This is an Exeter hallmark. JW is the mark of the Bristol company Josiah Williams & Co and the date letter F is for 1882/83, the very last year of operation of the Exeter Assay Office.

Re: Are these Irish marks?

London, not Irish. This is a Britannia standard hallmark with the maker's/sponsor's mark of Charles Stuart Harris and the date letter d for 1899/1900. Britannia standard is 958/1000 rather than sterling's 925/1000 and is marked here with the leopard's head erased mark for London together with the fi...

Re: Help identifying candlestick marks

Hi and welcome to the forum. You are right - it's English: Sheffield 1817 but the maker's mark has been deliberately defaced for some reason. However I think it could be the mark of Thomas & John Settle (note the suggestion of a final "S" and the position of the pellet): https://www.si...

Re: Irish Ale Tankard - need help with Hallmarks

This definitely looks like 1715 - I don't know why I didn't look any earlier than 1720; I think I must have assumed that there should have been 3 parts to the hallmark.

So the central mark must be what remains of the maker's mark.

Thanks, Aguest!

Re: Irish Ale Tankard - need help with Hallmarks

Definitely Irish judging by the harp. What I assume to be the date letter is in the style used during the letter cycle 1720-1745 and, judging from the mark placement there may also have been a Hibernia which is now worn away; this would further restrict the date range to 1731-1745. However I cannot ...
