Thank you for your thoughts and responses.

I have tested the metal in the areas where the gilt is slightly worn through near where the buckle fastens and I get a clear response that the metal under the gilding is silver.

I do agree the central stone is most likely an art glass.

Silver Gilt Buckle. Marks query.

Hi again Folks

Back again with another mystery mark I am hoping you can help me with.

I have been trying to figure this mark - its is a strange one
Buckle is silver gilt and reasonably heavy substantial piece - 77.4 grams.

Not sure what the central stone is - but the other stones look to be Onyx ...

In theory Makers marks should'nt be difficult to track down as I figured all the info must be held by the assay offices

Got it - just found the other soft cornered diamond mark - its the reserve mark for precious metals.

Your piece is definitely Tunisian.

The hand symbol is islamic and known as the Hand of Fatima.
If you google this phase you will find out its history - lots of info online.

I have the large Jacksons Silver and Gold hallmarks book which is good for identifying the makers of early british silver but hopeless for marks that are anything later than mid 19th century.

Just wondered if anyone could recommend a book that lists makers from mid 19th century to present ...
