Re: Storing silver with string tags

Had rubber in mind. I mean, who would think about it - until the results showed up? Likewise with string - didn't want an unpleasant surprise. Am relieved. Thank you both. Kit

Storing sterling and silver plate

I think I read somewhere that sterling and silver plate should be handled separately, i.e., washed and dried, stored in separate cupboards, etc. If so, then I presume anti-tarnish flatware pouches should not contain both sterling and silver plate?

Thanks, Kit

Storing silver with string tags

I am tired of running to the books to decode the information on my English silver and would like to tag each piece with a string label before I wrap it and put it away. Does the string cause any damage to the silver? The tags are the common variety found in any office supply store.

Re: What-is-it question CLXXXIV.

I believe this is a wine alarm. As the guests refresh themselves unequally from the white or red wines, the armature becomes unbalanced. This causes the bird to chirp, alerting the host that it's time to bring out another bottle.

Re: John Mason - New York - A Shattered Dream

I hope that the judgment of the court filled more than one person with disgust at the suggestion that the "good 'ol boy" network had been at work. Thanks to the volumes of data on Ancestry. com, we find that John Mason was born Apr 6, 1868, in Manhattan, NY, son of James Mason and Marie Lo...

Re: Richard Britton, Silversmith

Thanks, Agphile.
That cleared up a few questions about the relative usefulness of Grimwade and Jackson, at least for this type of question.
Sincerely,

Re: Richard Britton, Silversmith

Trev. I guess I didn't explain myself well. I have read the additional information from Grimwades posted in the Grimwades Updates forum but can't reconcile that the Richard Britton, who apparently was registered in 1812, was unentered in the rolls until 1848 (Jackson.) I certainly don't wish to beat...

Richard Britton, Silversmith

Are we dealing with one or two Richard Brittons? On our London marks pages, there is a Richard Britton with a mark [R mid-pellet B] in a rectangular field, registered London, 1812, Grimwade 2278, but no listing in Jackson (3d revised.) Yet, there is also a Richard Britton, Grimwade 449, no mark but ...

Re: John Mason - New York - A Shattered Dream

How very sad, and all due to lack of judgment - one assumes - not to a just dessert (desert?). I admit I was waiting for the final advertisement where he solicited clients for tightly sealing glass jars, suitable for vegetable preservation, but it never came. Just as well.

Re: From student to Master

Thanks, Oel.

That was just the right article! Surprised to read that journeyman played
so little part in the training/experience process; had expected another
fixed period of indenture before earning freedom from the Hall.

Thanks for the excellent reference!

From student to Master

I would appreciate it if someone would explain the training timeline from novice to silversmith. Begin with how one gets selected for apprenticeship and then on through to the point where one becomes independent in his shop (or partnership.) I am especially curious about the point at which a trainee...

Micaela:
I believe your pattern is labeled on Replacements, Ltd., as ELK7,
"silverplate, floral and leaf tip." No pattern name identified.

Weddings Gifts of 1886

Columbus, Nebraska, USA On May 27th, 1886, at 8:00 PM, a far-removed cousin married at her father’s residence and then entertained 300 guests for “social converse and a bountiful wedding feast.” A report of the festivities appeared in the Columbus-Journal on June 2nd and listed for their readers all...

Re: Belt buckle? Jewelry?

I always like a good guessing game. Does anyone see the possibility of a chatelaine here? Turn the item upside down and "pin" it to the goodwife's belt. Now the hook, with the help of gravity, can accept additional circles - each one of which leads a chain ending in a key, a scissors, -- a...

This pattern looks very similar to "Ambassador," (silverplate, 1919), which can be seen on the Replacements, Ltd. website, listed under both International Silver and Rogers Bros, 1847-Ins. The shape suggests a soup spoon; several types and lengths are listed underneath the pattern descript...

See "Modjeska," (silverplate, 1916) under Oneida at the Replacements, Ltd. website. Perhaps this is your pattern. Good luck.
