Re: Unknown Maker Coin Silver(?) Sugar Spoon

Concentrate on the presumed wholesaler marks as such: Star/????/Eagle. [Actually, a “mullet of six points”, but we’re cutting it to a simple form.] How do you read those marks, which might necessitate cleaning out first? The problem with the maker or retailer mark is that it might also be “D. D. Loc...

Wm. ROGERS (cartouche) alone

Lacking the additional stamps normally indicating coin silver, this standard maker’s mark with the slightly set-out “S” at the tail end begs the question of whether it is solid silver. (A side view shows the gauge of metal narrows as it moves along the handle outwards.) https://i.postimg.cc/zfXwpsKM...

Re: Austin of Erie with Additional Pseudos

One might compare the marks to the older TRASK entry accompanied by the “PURE-COIN” additional stamp:

St. Louis directory pages for 1840-41 and 1842 showing Mead & Adriance splitting into separate firms with Mead claiming to be a manufacturer of silver ware: https://i.postimg.cc/hvP68yM1/IMG-2041.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/G2j6ywPp/IMG-2042.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/kXh3sm06/IMG-2043.jpg

PURE COIN with E. MEAD & CO

An 8+” spoon sample from the Saint Louis firm of Edward Mead & Company. In this case, a typical “PURE COIN.” serifs stamp set far away from the firm mark. Perhaps suggesting that this was produced by a wholesale outfit in the east and only marketed by Mead as a retailer. [The known earlier mark ...

Re: Trask Coin Silver Fiddle Spoons

Booting back up….Did McGrew have any insight on either the PURE COIN serif stamps (variable types but all similar) or the three pseudos pictured on this piece (arm/hammer, two others)? Is this an unusual case where these stamps found with presumed retailer marks (jeweler, watchmaker, etc.) have been...

Re: Restaurantware Suppliers In Silverwares

Astor was used by various airlines, often just backstamped with initials such as D.A.L. for Delta Air Lines. Follows a sample as such marked TACA from El Salvador’s national carrier Transportes Aereos Centro Americanos (aka To All Central America) founded in 1931 and ultimately merged with Avianca: ...

Re: Gump’s: Blanchard Related?

I’m confining this to just samples approximating the Pointy-style shapes, but here’s a group shot with top-to-bottom Gump’s, WEB (same handle), Raimond (longer/fatter/smoother curve handle), and William Adams of Sheffield & New York (longer again). In the case of Adams, it only carries an abbrev...

Re: Gump’s: Blanchard Related?

I’ve checked two of my long knives with this handle…both blade marked as Raimond using Stainless Sheffield England, but with generically marked handles. But on a third, it has the exact same blade marks as the Gump’s sample and includes WEB as the maker or implied guarantor of the Sterling handle. S...

Gump’s: Blanchard Related?

Cake servers and long-blade cake knives with a plain HH in the Antique Pointy style, simply marked Sterling, are not unusual to see. Sometimes the blade might indicate a steel source like Sheffield, but this does not preclude domestic sourcing for any component assembly. [Even silverplate and stainl...

The initial marks appear both in this list of “G’s”, presumably a maker and perhaps a retailer but that awaits review: https://www.925-1000.com/denmarkG.html
