Re: Mary Sumner Spoon? Identification Help Needed Please
MS is, as you conjecture, Mary Sumner. The constituent parts of the hallmark are: - Duty Mark: in the form of the head of George IV; indicates that the relevant tax has been paid on the item - Date Letter: N for the assay year 1808/09 - Crowned leopard's head: symbol of the London Assay Office (repl...

Re: MK (Michael Keating) Spoon with strange engraving? Help Identification
MK is indeed Michael Keating. Your spoon was assayed in Dublin in the assay year 1799/1800 and the constituent parts of the hallmark are: - MK: maker's mark - Hibernia: duty mark (used until 1807 when, with the introduction of the monarch's head duty mark, it became the Dublin town mark) - Crowned H...

Re: Pocket Watch Key - Scotland?
I agree that the stones look Scottish, but there were a few manufacturers of this kind of product who had Birmingham-registered marks. Known makers include James Fenton & Co and Adie & Lovekin.

The images were fine when I embedded them but it would appear that Google Drive image URLs (addresses) are dynamic rather than fixed so change for every session. I have had another go by re-hosting them:

I see a partial Birmingham hallmark for 1894. Compare my exemplar of this date with the rotated mark:

Hi and a belated welcome to the forum. In the hope that better visibility will provoke a response I am embedding ...

Re: I this mark Jersey or London?
This mark does not appear in Jackson's list of London marks and there does not seem to be any evidence of a London hallmark so I would be inclined to believe the Jersey attribution. I leave it to others to comment on the construction of the spoon, which seems to me to be somewhat unusual.

Re: Word Clarification-"Antique" For Letters
I agree that it would be great if we could standardise on a system but I think that using the term Gothic, given modern usage, for regular lettering would be just too confusing. Grimwade in his book on London marks uses the term "Roman" to mean normal lettering and "Gothic or black-le...

Re: Magnifying Glass
I can't help with a name for NJ D. However I do not think that the rim is silver (a) as there is no sort of fineness indication and (b) as I suspect that the small mark to the right may read EP, which, if I am correct, would stand for electroplate. There seem to have been quite a lot of knife handle...

Re: paperweight with silver base
I have now had a reply from the Sheffield Assay Office confirming that the sponsor's mark on the paperweight is indeed that of Sileda Ltd. I quote from the e-mail: Having had a good look through over 30 files who all used SL in their sponsor mark, I have formed the following conclusions: I believe I...

Re: Help to identify cufflinks marker and hallmarks
The X in oval is actually Edinburgh's import mark and this LL is definitely Links of London. The cuff links were therefore made abroad and imported by Links as sponsors.
