Hi, When I acquired this marrow scoop, I was immediately reminded of a story that I heard many years ago, and when I posted I hoped someone might confirm the story without me prompting them, thus bringing some credilbility to it, as I had heard it only once. I was told the reason provincial makers a...

Hi Clive, That's an interesting point and one I had not thought of before, I've seen items where the piercings had cut through the hallmark and assumed that it was a later decoration or that if it was punched in a block of four that one had clipped a piercing, but applying the decoration later makes...

Hi Charles, The Foxs' were quite a dynasty, possibly starting with a Charles Fox, a silversmith who entered his mark in Dublin in 1747. The Fox business we know of today started on 20th October 1801 when Charles Fox (1), entered into partnership with James Turner at 3, Old Street, London. The partne...

Hi, Sorry that nobody could help you so far, but don't give up, the great thing about the Forum is that someone could see it next year and answer your question! The fact that noboby has answered so far would indicate that your Champagne bucket is not a common one, which is good news. I don't think T...

Hi John, The Sun mark is the import mark for London, the K indicates that the date of the import was 1905, the 925 is the standard for sterling silver i.e.925/1000. The BM is the importers mark and stands for Berthold Muller. He was a very large importer of silver at this period. I'll let someone el...

Hi Miles, Thanks for spotting the typo. The spoon is in excellent condition with very little wear and there is no evidence of a makers mark ever having been struck. I feel this error would never happen in London, where the control was undoubtingly stricter, that and the Lion Passant points to the pr...

Unusual Hanoverian Teaspoon
Hi, This is an unusual teaspoon, it is a fancy-back Hanoverian pattern of a type you would expect to find c.1850, but it has an incised 1784/5 Duty mark and it has no makers mark or any sign that it ever had one. The Lion Passant is a provincial one and it is just under 5" in length. It is poss...

Interesting Marrow Scoop
Hi, I would be interested on anyones' thoughts on this marrow scoop, it's 8 1/4" in length and whilst quite narrow it is of a heavy gauge. It has only two marks, a makers mark JM in an oblong box, and a head in profile facing right very similar to a British duty mark and contained in a circle. ...

Goldsmith's Hall Warning Notices
In the early 18th century, prior to there being a fully organised police force, if you were robbed there was little chance of seeing your silver again. To counter this problem Goldsmith's Hall organised a very effective system of passing information, in September 1722 they advertised this service: U...
