I wondered about the 2 bumps also but when I googled photos of horse hoof inkwells, found they often have them. The mount in question is attached at the top of the hoof and the 2 bumps cater for what is called the hoof "bulb".
Cheers,
Steve

Hi Bremckee,
Looked Dutch to me with pseudo marks, so a quick look at the amazing info written by Oel has solved your query. Look up Herbert Hooijkaas on the link below:

Re: What is this cover?
Hi Niceguy1,
I would suggest it is the silver mount from a horse hoof inkwell.

Steve

Re: Birmingham brooch
Hi Luci, I believe the makers mark is J.R.E. This maker appears to have been a prolific "sweetheart" brooch manufacturer from the very end of the 19th C to the late 1910's as I have come across many examples. Infact, brooches are the only items I have seen by him/her. Unfortunately, I have...

Re: John Bridge, London 1825, but what is it?
Hi Thomas, If you have a look at Phil's website; http://www.silvermakersmarks.co.uk/Makers/London-IA-ID.html#IB you will notice that there are quite a number of London makers who registered an I pellet B makers mark and were working at this time. The most prolific appears to be that of Joseph Biggs....

Re: Identifying Birks Ware is Either Sterling or Plate
Hi, I believe you have a Sphinx mark rather than seated lion. I have seen this exact mark (plus several other sphinx marks) attributed to silver plate manufactured by John Batt & Co of Sheffield. In particular, there is a dish for sale on eBay now that has this mark plus the words "Sheffiel...

Re: unknown toothpick holder? help if you can please
Not necessarily. It is indeed very commonly found on UK silver as it is the part of the hallmarking system that denotes that the silver is comprised of 925 parts per 1000. This amount or "fineness" of 925/1000 is called "sterling". Sterling silver is the most commonly used in the...

Re: unknown toothpick holder? help if you can please
Hi Playful0, The three marks are the makers marks belonging to the Hunt Silver Company of New York and Chicago. The immediate give away that this piece is not British is the word "Sterling" which is nearly always associated to post 1860 American silver. A quick investigation under the Amer...

Re: This fancy spoon appears to be from Birmingham. Can anyone tell me anything else?
Hi Bob, I can offer a few more details on your spoon which has already been correctly identified as being made by Gorham of Providence Rhode Island. The pattern is known as Cambridge which was introduced in 1899. This particular perforated spoon (there were many different perforated types produced i...

Hello Kanman82, I'm unsure why your pictures aren't showing as I'm new to the forum myself. I have copied your urls into my browser and examined the photos. It's a most unusual loving cup of mixed metals including sterling silver. The maker is Thomas G Brown and Sons of New York. You can find more d...

Hi All, I'm new to the forum but have been using this wonderful website for many years. I have come across an original makers label for "Y in yacht" which is what the company calls itself. I would upload a photo of the label but it is part of an eBay listing and according to the rules I ju...
