European Fork and Knive with Coronet

Dear Forum members can you help me with this fork and knive? From the style of the handle I would date it between 1720 and 1800, the style of the steel parts allow a much later date, up to 1900. No marks on the silver handles. The knive blade has a mark "VOLLMAR". I would place it to a Eur...

Hi Trev

I am now in this forum for 7 years, look in it daily and reached even "contributor" status. But I was not aware there is a "Family crest" section. What a shame...

Process to identify a coat of arms

Hi all Do you know a process how I can identify a coat of arms? Is there a website for that? Unfortunately, the silver item I am working on to identify has no marks, only a coat of arms. The piece is most probably European, between 1750 and 1850, the coat of arms bears a nobility crown. So I am look...

Hi Avenger if you examine the marks on the lid closely, do you think they are the same as the marks on the bottom? If yes this would be a good hint towards silver and not silver plated. Attached items on massive silver pieces hat to be marked with the same marks as the base piece. The marking could ...

Re: Help with info about M. MÖCKEL german 800 ashtray

Scrolling through the internet searching M. Möckel I found a reference to a silber object, manufacturer M. Möckel. The Datenbank zum "Central Collecting Point München", Alle Karteikarten/Datensätze zur Mü-Nr. 44904. It is a database about "Karteikarte - Restitutionskartei", ...

Re: Help with info about M. MÖCKEL german 800 ashtray

Hi Micaela No information from my side about M. Möckel. But I checked the inscription. You may have noticed from the style and the date that it is an object from peak Nazi time. The Reichswirtschaftskammer was a high profile organisation, its task was to align the economy to the wishes of the rouli...

Re: 1910 E.T. "800" ?? W. Mahnke (Spoon) Help Please

Hi SpiderGirl As Trev pointed out it is German 800 Silver. You can recognize the two marks in the middle as the half moon and crown which were and still are the German hallmark for silver items with a purity of 800 (80% silver) or more. I googeled W. Mahnke and spoons bearing that name can be found ...

Re: Unknown manufacturer mark on tea spoons, probably Swiss

Hi Trev I was able to solve the mistery in the meantime. The coat of arms with flower mark is from Johann Jakob Stähli-Rebmann, from Zürich, in Business from 1886 to 1920. The flower mark belongs to Karl Langemann, from Zürich, Born 1852, died 1919. IH, probably the retailer, is still unidentifie...

Re: unknown mark - Hanau??

The HP mark in the middle resembles the mark of Hans Peter Oeri from Zürich. Born 1637, master 1672, died 1692. So Bossard imitated marks of earlier periods.

Dear Rusei Atelier Bossard, founded by Johann Balthasar Bossardafter 1830. His son Karl Silvan Bossard (1846 - 1914), in business from 1869 to 1901 raised the atelier to an international recognized manufacturer of silver items. He won with his products a gold medal on the world exhibitions in Paris ...

Re: Coin silver Apostle flatware?

Hi You have to accept the situation. You are the owner of a set of silver plated apostle spoons and forks. They are still in their original box. This helps for dating. I estimate something between 1960 and 1980. Maybe a couple of years earlier. As Trev mentioned, most probably German. To pin down th...

Dear Dark Indigo Dognose is right, please provide pictures in the future. A decent camera with macro zoom in the price range above 150$ will do it. Or follow the guideline from Theodorich, using a magnifing glass in front of the lens. Anyway, for this post: Your spoon is silver plated. Alpacca (plea...

Re: need help finding out who the silversmith is and what ag

Hi Mandy I am not an expert in styles, but let my try: to answer your question about the style: The silversmith was active in the Art Nouveau period. Art Nouveau was a very short living style, starting in the late 1890, and at the outbreak of WWI it was already over. One of the key elements of art n...

Dear Mandy

I think this is a smoking utensil. The middle bear the cigarettes or cigars. The matches and a small candle complement the piece.

Kind regards

So, now we are in the New World! For me the analyses from JBA and JLDogett make sense. American Coin Silver then. I have a few American coin silver spoons, also from the period mentioned, but non of them is so light or so thin. I am also not experienced in this topic. I am aware that from the 1820ie...

Re: Battered Teaspoon With Single Hallmark: M with Dot

There is no reason to to doubt this is silver. To me this looks like the work of a small silversmith company from around 1850 to 1860. I did not find a reference for this mark but similar marks I have seen, particularly on spoons from my area of collection, Switzerland. The fact that it is so batter...

I support the points made towards Pochon Frères in Berne. And to address Oel's concerns: The grouse and bear were not mandatory and no enforcement was and is there in Switzerland to hallmark silver items. Not a lot of silver items from 1890 to 1930 bear the grouse mark, so we should not worry about...

Re: Silver milk cup For Kanne

Dear touqeer If this "mark" is in the middle of the base then it is most probably not a hallmark but just the center point of the metal forming process on a turning lathe. I think your item is silverplated I suggest to clean it. Hallmarks on silver plated items are often very light or fine...

Dear Sparrow thank you, yes it is Gottlieb Kurz. My shortcoming, I did not search the German marks due to the missing crown and half moon. Theoderich, or was it Bahner?, gave a reply with the same answer, Gottlieb Kurz, on October 26. I posted the item in the single image section, then someone copie...
