17th century Swiss Apostle Spoon

Not sure who the maker is but it is stylistically very Swiss. It is only marked with an O and this could simply be part of a mark. The spoon measures about 6.75" long. Any help with this spoon will be appreciated. https://i.postimg.cc/8F3bqMqG/IMG-5577.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/WDtnWXYS/IMG-5578...

Van Der Lely 1717 Lion Shield Spoon

I was super excited to get this spoon. I forget which Van Der Lely of Leeuwarden Friesland made this. The first initial 'S.G. 1717' is probably contemporary to the spoons production, then a different family member pinpricked W.G. above this, and finally, a latter member engraved S.G. 1880 into the s...

18th century German? Ball foot beaker. Unknown maker

I recently purchased this simple cup. It only has an applied band around the middle with no other decoration. It is marked FHK inside of an oval twice with scratch assay marks. The interior of the rim and the band have gilding still. It stands about 3.5" tall. It may not be German at all but th...

I think amena is correct. And given how little of the mark is left it's a miracle he recognizes any of it.

Re: Differences in marking on Gorham Stainless/Sterling Hollow Knives

The blade is indeed silver plated over regular steel. you can see the rust coming through where the plating has worn off. Most silver-plated dinner blades predate stainless steel so this must be a very early knife in the pattern.

Re: 1702 Queen Anne Caudle Cup

that is the article and I wish that were me too. Thanks for your input. I figured it was a later engraving but was hoping to be wrong. It is still a nice cup and if I am going to have a Victorianized decoration on the cup at least it's an engraving rather than repousse work.

Re: 1702 Queen Anne Caudle Cup

Yeah probably, it looks more Victorian baroque fantasy style than genuine baroque. Repaired after that at some point

1702 Queen Anne Caudle Cup

I believe this cup is by London Silversmith John Downes of London c.1702/3. It has been repaired in several places. If you google 1702 caudle cup you'll find an article about this particular cup but that is not me, I only just received it. My question is whether the engraved decoration is original o...

Also I believe the figure is holding an open book (probably the bible) but it is hard to tell in my picture

Re: Frisian Bolsward occasin Spoon with amazing engraving

thanks, Peter, I just noticed that the other spoon has the number 10526 SPV on it in the same spot and I bought them from the same source so they were probably added by the former collector as a reference. I thought the maker might be Pierkens but it also matched the mark of an unknown maker in my o...

Another Frisian Occasion spoon c.1753

Not sure at all who the maker is for this one and I don't have a lot of confidence in its being identified but again it has a great engraving on it. The figure is also larger on this one than I usually see at about 1.5" tall. Any help would be appreciated https://i.postimg.cc/MM9TvDKs/IMG-4502....

Frisian Bolsward occasin Spoon with amazing engraving

Not sure who the maker is for this spoon but I think it is from Bolsward Friesland. The figure is also larger than I am used to, it's about 1.5" tall. The engraving looks like a marriage spoon or a birth spoon not sure. https://i.postimg.cc/jwtTtbsP/IMG-4484.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/w1Rgk2fy/IM...

Re: Friesian Silver Occasion spoon with unknown maker

Thanks, Peter, an overstrike or double strike would explain the mysterious mark. For me, the beautifully engraved windmill was the real allure. I have a couple more interesting Frisian spoons on the way.

Friesian Silver Occasion spoon with unknown maker

Not sure who the maker is and I am looking for some assistance. It is a strange maker mark but it has an amazing engraving of a period windmill. I am also not exactly sure what the engraving says but I believe it commemorates somebody's life via their date of birth and death but hopefully Peter can ...

Thank you Peter! The fact that this was eventually reused as a funeral spoon is especially interesting to me.
