Re: Prague 1837 tobacco case
Hi I still think this is not Ferdinand I of Austria but his Father, Francis I (II). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_II,_Holy_Roman_Emperor My reasoning is as follows: When the case was made Ferdinand was alive. In 1837 it was fashionable to depict contemporary people in an mythological Environ...

Re: Are these spoons from London? George Gray
All thank you for your contribution and the clarification on the missing mark. Makes sense. Item closed. Let me spin off from the original topic, asking on the duties due in various times and countries. How much was the tax on silver in London in the late 17hunderts? And in France in the Ancien Regi...

Are these spoons from London? George Gray
I have these 6 small spoons, 12 grams each. They have the Sterling lion, a date letter A, a bust (George III?) and a maker mark, first letter capital G, second letter most probably also capital G. City mark is missing. I assume they are from London, GG for George Gray and A for 1796. What do you thi...

What is this erased mark on this bedouin jewelery?
I have this bedouin jewelery 30 years now. It is time to find out some information on it. Can you give me some basic information about it? How old is it? Where is it from? I think it consist of older parts, the band, and newer additions, the chain and the side pieces. Do you agree? And foremost, wha...

Re: DS Unknown Swiss?
Hi
I am still not with my books, so the "DS" has to wait.
To your question on fineness: Yes, most probably 0.800 silver. When Stähli-Rebmann was in business 13 lot was already phased out.

Hi
Yes, Switzerland, Zurich.
The flower mark is from Johann Jakob Stähli-Rebmann, from Zürich, in Business from 1886 to 1920.
We had the mark already here:

Re: Face of a man, mustache
Hi Sebastian The marking system in Geneva from 1815 to 1881 was as follows: 1st standard (950) an eagle head 2nd standard (875) a horse head 3rd standard (800) a lions head. Your man with mustache is a lion's head, there should be a small 3 on top of it. Finess 800. It looks your two items have diff...

Re: Any ideas on this spoon?
Hi the shield held by the bearer is from Berne, capital of Switzerland. We can assume this is one spoon of a set, a spoon per Swiss canton, at this time either 22 spoons (one for each full canton) plus a spoon for Switzerland, or 24 spoons if a spoon per half canton was made. Crowned letters were us...

What can you tell me on this ring from Central America?
My first jewelry post.... I am asking for a friend: The family of my friend claims possesion of this ring for at least 5 generations. According family tradition, a female family member owned the ring already in the 1890ies or early 1900. They are from Central America and assume the ring origines fro...

Re: 1697 Silver Spoon from Unknown Country?
Hi
can you post larger, high definition pictures of the marks on the bowl. the 13.. mark looks much less worn. Anyway, I am not an expert in Scandinavian silver, but would expect to see a 13 1/2 mark. A good picture would confirm this.

Just for the records: 10 years ago I was wrong, but I had time to learn. Yes Pochon in Bern, Switzerland. My statment from 10 years ago it is not Bern was incorrect. But the fun part is, you show us a similar item as from the discussion 10 years ago, same marking, same Wilkens pattern, same fork typ...

Yes, Jezler, a bit more than 100 years old. They had a habit on marking ladles and sauce spoons and similar items on the side in this period. I do not know why. Regards, Jörg

Re: Another I (Perth?)
I have a collection of Swiss silver spoons, starting around 1750. Spoons from this type are common in my collection, they usually date from 1800, take or give a few years. However, I have not many spoons from outside Switzerland, so I have little experience if this type is common in Europe or rather...

Hi, most probably your item is pewter. The 95% is a strong indication, 95% tin.

Re: Mystery 18th c French (colonial?) bowl
Hi If you search online, you find some items by this silversmith. Their quality is excellent. To your bowl, I unterstand what you mean, very battered. I do not think your bowl was crude when made, imagine it new and undamaged, without dents and repairs. Also without handles. I think it was later repa...
