Help identifying possible Mexican hammered knife

Post by tklwoooh »

I recently came across a silver knife, letter opener or butter knife that has some marks I cannot identify. It is 5 3/4" long and about 15/16" across at the widest point of the blade. The handle is hollow, and it weighs about 28 grams. It tests sterling and is quite nicely made. The hammering is very distinct and heavy, and there is applied "rope" and a Mayan or Aztec style figure on the handle.

I'm hoping someone on here can tell me who the maker is; I'm constantly amazed by the knowledge of the users of this site! To be honest, about everything I know about the silver in my collection I've learned on here, and I thank all of you who contribute and share your knowledge!

Incidentally, in case anyone was curious, I took the closeup photos with my cell phone by simply holding my loupe against the camera lens and carefully adjusting the distance until it was in focus. Not as good as a nice macro lens, but I thought not too bad for an improvised solution.
