Need help identifying hallmarks on silver cuspidor

Post by goodtaste »

I would appreciate any help anyone can give in identifying the hallmarks on this silver cuspidor. It measures 5 inches in diameter and 1 3/4 inches high. It is hand hammered and well finished. Could lt be a ladies cuspidor?
Thanks!

Those marks are very similar to Spanish colonial marks used in Mexico.
The BTON mark would be the assayer's mark, Cayetano Buitron, 1823 - 1843.

My book shows this set of marks as forgeries, used c.1930 in Mexico.
I have little experience with Spanish colonial silver, so I can't say for sure.
