Post by jestercom »

hi this a a very large tray about 30 in long and 18 in wide i have tried to decipher the mark on the bottom with really no luck. i have found similar platters on the web but have yet to find the mark. i would like to know where this is from, how old it is and what it is made of. anything you can tell me would be helpful
thanks

Good day Jester,

Was just speaking with an Egyptian friend who believes that the language is actually Farsi and not Arabic. That being said there should be others marks on this tray indicating silver purity. Please have a look around. And please do shot images in indirect day light without a flash, much easier to see the design.

There are other members who speak Arabic and Farsi, let's see what they have to say.

also the mark appears to have been double struck so there is a faint mark over a deeper mark

Jester,

Yes did note that both words have a double strike. The backwards B and the 4 may be some sort of internal factory code. Without other marks this may be silver-plate, do go over even the smallest marks carefully. Again would appreciate additional images of the tray and the border.

Jester,

Trying to look over the design motif, appears to be of a European style not what you would expect to see coming from traditional Persian/Iranian workshops. The shape and the way the feet are attached appear to 20th century.
