Niello Tea / Coffee Set

Post by russell.shivas »

I have recently been offered a Niello Tea / Coffee set, I normally collect UK assay'd silver, but was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to give me some advise. The set weighs 26oz, and I have loaded some images that I believe include a possible markers mark. The jug and bowl have a P engraved on them and the tea / coffee pot has a black P "Painted" upon it. If anyone is able to provide some advice, it would be gratefully received.

Hello
Its Iraqi solid silver probably from the 1930s.
As far as I know there is no published research into the subject of Iraqi silver or the silversmiths and their marks
However I understand that the best silversmiths were from the Mandean Christian minority and the centres of manufacture tended to be in the south, notably near Amarah.
The niello work shows scenes associated with this area, such as palm trees, reed beds and the reed buildings of the Marsh Arabs.
thank you
