Help with a Japanese box please

Post by chelsea98 »

Hi,

I've got this lovely japanese silver box.. i wondered if anyone knew the markings on it please. I've absolutely no idea at all. In fact, theres two images of the markings as I don't even know which way up they're supposed to be. I can't also tell if the lid has been gilded or if it is in fact gold. the whole lid has a rose colour gold glow to it but the leaves also have silver on them. the kingfisher looks more like a yellow gold compared to the rest of the lid. Also, if anyone happens to know what the inscription is that'd be great as well!

many thanks in advance for you help!

Hi,

You are far more likely to get responses if you embed your images as very few people will click on thumbnails or links.

Your box is made by the Mitsukoshi company. More here:
http://www.smokingsamurai.com/MITSUKOSHI.html

The individual maker's mark reads "幸一主" = "(made by) master Koichi". Though, I'm not sure regarding the last kanji. Usually (99% of the times), the first two kanji in the 3-kanji signature represent the maker's name/surname and the last kanji is either "作" ("to make / maker") or "製" ("to produce / producer").
