Need help getting info on old silver brooch/pin

Post by Payter »

Hi,

I am trying to find out some info on a brooch my mother found years ago in the Lowther Arms Pub in Parton, Cumbria, England.
My mother owned the pub at the time and was getting some building work done. She said it was found buried in the three foot thick walls.

I have tried to get some information on it in the past but have not found anything.

It is a silver brooch/pin with the hallmark: J.LAW
There are no other marks bar that one.

Any information on this would be very much appreciated. We have had the brooch for over 25 years and it would be great to find out more about it.
Thanks for any help.

/Peter

Hi Oel,

Thanks for the reply! Ah so it's a kilt pin. I wasn't sure exactly what it was. I just thought it was some sort of brooch.
Would it be fair to say that it is from the 1800s?

Are there any other online resources around where I could find out more?

Thanks,
Peter

Hi Peter,

Yes, Victorian era. J. Law’s mark also seen on medals and according to Peter Cameron Antique Silver; J. Law active c1824-c1860. I believe that’s all the internet will offer us about the Scottish retailer J. Law.

Best,
Oel.
