Makers mark on Cuff-links

Post by Gerryatrickgolf »

Hello,
I wonder if you help me identify the makers of my silver cuff-links. The makers mark is MCH, which I first thought was M C Hersey of London, but their mark is different. The Assay mark is Edinburgh 1999, I think. I have attached two photos to help. Thanks in advance, Gerry.

You are correct with Edinburgh 1999. The Incorporation of Goldsmiths of the City of Edinburgh have a site which allows identification of sponsors' marks and they do indeed show a similar MCH mark which was registered by an "amateur jeweller", Mary Craig Hood, on 17 November 1969.

Hi there

I am Archivist here at the Incorporation of Goldsmiths. Rather than being a 1960's amateur still making today, I would say that the mark is that of Mark Charles Hutchison, trading as Mercator. The firm went out of business in 2009.

Hi Elspeth,

Welcome to the Forum.

Many thanks for the information, it is appreciated and we hope to hear a lot more from you.

Mark Hutchinson's Mercator Manufacturing Limited, perhaps a follow-on from the original company, are still in business. They design and manufacture jewellery etc. for Burberry, Georg Jensen, Swarovski, Dunhill, Hugo Boss, and others and are Hong Kong based.
