Help Identifying brooch

Post by linkedm9 »

I recently found this brooch under the floor boards of a house we were demolishing

the hallmark is extremely small and almost impossible to read
seems to have a large chunk of cut Citrine in the center
but from left to right starting at the round mark it appears to be MG [x] [x] [M] with the x's being illegible to my eye
in the photos it appears as if the last letter is N but im pretty certain its a M could be wrong

i am unsure is silver or pewter thanks for the help

Welcome to the forum. Looks like an Edinburgh hallmark. Maybe someone else will recognize more. A larger and sharper image of the mark will help with identification.

It looks like Edinburgh to me too. The sponsor's mark is fairly unusual as it it is in a circular punch shape and so MG would be the mark of Ortak Silvercraft of Kirkwall, Orkney. MG are the initials of Malcolm Gray, the principal of the company. Blowing the mark up I think I see the date letter N for 1987 (M would be 1986). For confirmation of my guesses here is my example of Ortak's mark and a representation of the 1987 Edinburgh hallmark:
