Silver/silverplated box

[Lessing]

This box has only the mark 12 on the outside bottom. I have always assumed this is a silver plate item until I saw on the web a similar box sold as Polish sugar box in 12 Lot silver. The mark was also the same 12. Does anybody have better information.
