Hoping to get some help with the marks on my large spoon.
I know Mayo worked out of Newark, NJ and did a lot of silverplate and some silver but I am interested in a bit more information as to what the marks on the spoon actually mean and what type of spoon this is.
It is marked BENJ J MAYO 4P. Curious as to what 4P stands for. Also marked with what looks like PAT.MARI ... possibly MARIA? and another stray mark. I can't really make that out. Is that the pattern?
The spoon has an interesting cleft/cleavage in the center. I think the pattern is really lovely. Wondering what type of spoon this is.
Any help appreciated. Thanks!
Help with marks from Benj J Mayo
Re: Help with marks from Benj J Mayo
Without knowing the size of the spoon, I'll take a guess that it is a suqar shovel. The Patent Mar 1... may have something to do with a patent date. The 4P is likely to mean quadruple plate.

Thank you! That makes perfect sense. 4P = 4 electroplates. The spoon is actually quite large. It's 9 inches in length.

Maybe a berry spoon?
