UK nurses belt clasp hallmark query

Post by pixie2097 »

Hello, completely new to this site. I'm doing some investigation for mum. She was a nurse in London for years before retiring. The item relates to her employment. The item I'm looking at is a silver (??) nurses clasp with a fairly standard cherub design. The marks I've tried to look up, but they're quite faded. At a guess it relates to London (is it a leopards head?), maybe late 19th Century (An E?) but can't be sure. I've got no interest in the value, just the history of the clasp. Can anyone improve on my guess?

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

Not hallmarks I'm afraid, as the item is plated. The four marks in the centre are the letters 'EPNS' (Electro Plated Nickel Silver). The mark on the far right appears to be a crown (sideways), a popular mark used by platers until c.1896 when its use on plated wares was outlawed. The mark on the far left will likely identify the maker, but it is not ringing any bells with me at the moment.

Hopefully another member has some thoughts.

Trev.
