Antique sterling match safe marked "M sterling 16"

I found this match safe? at an estate sale and just wondering what the marks mean, or what the age of this item is. Any help would be greatly appreciated. It's marked: M Sterling 16

Welcome to the Forum.

I'm not entirely sure, but Rainwater notes a very similar mark and attributes it to the Miller Jewelry Co. of Cincinnati, who apparently also made items in sterling silver.

The company were working from at least 1914 until at least 1922.

Hopefully someone better acquainted with American marks will add their thoughts.

A friend borrowed my Rainwater, so I can't look up the Miller Jewelry mark shown for comparison (they were in business from 1900 to the late '30s) - but have always seen that serifed 'M' mark ascribed as a variant of New York manufacturer D.J. Mahony/Mahoney, in business from around 1890 and noted as out of business by 1904.
