Set of 9 Sterling Plates

Post by AmyB »

I have a set of 9 sterling plates, I assume they are bread plates. They measure about 6 1/4" in diameter. There are no markings other than the word "sterling" on the back. I am just trying to determine age if anyone can give me some idea. Thanks for your help,

Amy

If your plates are American and are marked only "Sterling" with no maker's mark, they date to before 1961. At that time the U.S. government required a maker's mark on all precious metal objects produced in the US. I know for American sterling flatware that most items marked only "Sterling", in general, date to before 1915. However, I'm not sure that holds true for holloware. Perhaps someone who is better with style can narrow the dates down for you.
