Help with hallmarks, please

Post by Gnath »

Very small communion set. Have had it appraised and am happy with that. The set is quite small, with the paten or dish being perhaps 2 1/2" across. Looking at the charts, it seems to have the Birmingham anchor and a date mark for, I think, 1830. (Expert correction welcomed on either or both.) What I am stumped with is the first symbol. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Gnath,

Welcome to the Forum.

Not Birmingham, but the other side of the Atlantic, it's a Gorham piece.

See: http://www.925-1000.com/Gorham_Date_Code.html

Thank you. Any idea what the "20 B" would mean?

The "20 B" would be an internal factory pattern/model/batch number.

Hi,
Gorham has dated silver
http://www.925-1000.com/Gorham_Date_Code.html
The mark can be seen top right but not well struck (even the background cannot be determined).
I suppose there should be better struck mark in one of the pieces, try to find it if you want to date the set.
