Please help to identify this hallmark

Post by lulutieungu »

I recently just picked up this spoon from an estate sale. It has a very strange hallmark and unique style to me. I did some research online, but there is no luck so far. It would be most grateful for any information on the the marks on this spoon and what it is used for.
Thanks.

Your spoon is a reproduction of the Anointing Spoon used at British Coronations. I don't recognise the manufacturer's mark but the use of the word sterling suggests a North American company. Anointing spoon manufacture seems to peak around the time of coronations as they were often sold as souvenirs of the event.

Not that there aren't a lot of Anglophiles in the U.S., but a souvenir anointing spoon would more likely be from a Canadian company - from what I can make out in your pic, P.W. Ellis' 'E-in-maple leaf' trademark is a good possibility...
