gold ring with multiple hallmarks

Post by chad in nb »

I found a ring with multiple hallmarks
1. H.C - makers marks
2. 22 - the fineness of the ring
3. tree with fish and bird - Glasgow hallmark?
4. upright lion facing left - Glasgow hallmark?
5. Thistle - Edinbrough hallmark?
6. Capitol T in Italics - year date for one of the assay mark?

Any help would be great if you could help narrow down the years, A friend by looking at some reference material stated somewhere between 1819 and 1854??

Well, Glasgow is right, but I'm not sure about the dating. As far as I can tell, and subject to being corrected, the marks for gold were the same as those for silver. Therefore, using this hypothesis as a base, I would say that your ring is:

1) 22 carats (.916 gold)
2) Assayed in Glasgow (the tree with fish and bird / upright lion / thistle markings were used in Glasgow after 1914)
3) Would date to 1916 (the date letter is quite distinctive).

Unfortunately, Jacksons 3rd Edition indicates that godlsmith records in this period were poorly kept and are not very comprehensive - as such, I have been unable to find a maker.

Waylander thanks for your time and expertise, it is amazing what you can find with a metal detector. Little finds like this is what makes back pain worthwhile.
