Unknown marks on box

Post by JaneDaisy »

Hi all,
I hope you can help - this box came from my family's estate and I don't know what these marks signify. I only guessed Birmingham because of the Lion, but he's in the middle so I'm not sure. The marks look like a big X, followed by an X in a box, followed by a swirl with bumpy bottom, followed by the lion, followed by ??
Above the marks is H7146 scratched in, and on the right side, sideways, is scratched PR.
There are 3D cupids hunting birds on the top, and the inside is really untarnished.
Does anyone know what this box is and where it's from? L: 8" x W: 3" x H: 2.5
Thanks so much for your help!

Hi,
Pseudo lion passant, not British marks.
Maybe Wolf & Knell (Hanau)
Take a look here:

http://www.925-1000.com/Fgerman_hanau_marks_01.html

Hanau silversmiths used various combinations of marks: in this particular case ``crowned G`` and ``Maltese cross`` are easily recognizable.
Besides, the box looks very Hanau.

Hi AG2012,
Thank you so much for that information. Because of the pseudo marks, does that mean it is not solid silver? It weighs 1.14 lbs.
Thanks again!

Hi,
Pseudo marks refer to unconventional marking system (Hanau, Germany). Sometimes accompanied by German ``crescent and crown`` Reichsmark and common millesimal standards .800, .830 even sterling

Thank you, again AG2012, for that additional information. It's all so very interesting!

Do you think the pseudo marks I showed in the picture indicate whether this box is made of sterling? It doesn't have the numbers you mention. If the marks do not show whether or not it is sterling, how would I find out if it is? Take a test of the metal?

Thanks so much for your time in helping me answer these questions! Much appreciated! I've looked at the Hanau silver online and yes, it looks like that style, so already I know so much more!

Hi,
Silver fineness can be tested with modern non - aggressive methods, i.e. without acid test.
Most of Hanau silver is not sterling, but a bit lower standard (which makes no difference).
