Info on Early 1800s Geerman Tazza Compote

Post by person1 »

Hi. Have an old silver and cut glass compote. Thanks to one of your posters I learned some info on this (maker and country of origin). I was told it is from Berlin and the maker was Carl Heinrich Schoppe. With that info I saw that if I flipped the assayers marks it is a bear with a "K" and the other mark is an "A". So, with more info from your web site, if I'm correct, it looks like it dates to the 1819-1842 from the assayers marks. What I am trying to do is narrow down the dating. Is it 1820s, 1830s, or so. Also, what would be the silver content .750, 800, other? The only other marks on bottom are 2 small zigzags and a small round mark too worn to read. Any info on Carl Heinrich Schoppe would be appreciated, if you have anything. I have collected American Coin silver for many years by Continental silver is a bit "foreign" to me. I like to learn everything I can on the items I have. I, hopefully, attached 2 pics (one of the compote and one of the marks. Thank you for your time

Bear with K= Zeichen des 1.Zeichenmeisters J.C.S. Kessner (Nr 1455) vom 19.1.1819 bis zu seinem Tode 4.9.1854 Datierte Werke: 1821-1850
A in circle = Zeichen des 2. Zeichenmeisters B.G.F. Andreack (Nr. 1508) vom 19.1.1819 bis zu seinem Tode 20.2.1842 Datierte Werke: 1821-1841
Nr 1629 Carl Heinrich Schoppe (you are correct!)
Some of his works are mentioned:; Nr 14 mark C.SC. (im Rechteck) a) Zuckerschale rund, mit 2 Henkeln auf Fuß mit 3 Schwänen, Berlin, Privatbesitz
(I think its like your tazza!) Dating should be between 1821 and 1823. Scheffler doesn't mention the widow continuing his work. She died in 1852 63 years old. by the way you should look at th little worn mark if its showing a 12 or 14 (löthig)

I quoted from "Wolfgang Scheffler BERLINER GOLDSCHMIEDE Daten Werke Zeichen - Verlag Bruno Hessling Berlin 1968"
Your tazza is a lovely piece of work and quite modern for the early 1820ies
regards Wolfgang
