French Hallmarks - Need Help
Re: French Hallmarks - Need Help
Not French; sorry!
Re: French Hallmarks - Need Help
Okay - I'll accept that - but - then, what county are the marks attributed to?
Re: French Hallmarks - Need Help
Hi,
Not sure but perhaps Belgian marks, the W crowned could be the mark of Belgian jeweler Joseph Wauters (1832-?), and the other marks looks like a wulf perhaps for a member of the Belgian Wolfers family and with unrecorded marks(?)
Belgium
To defend against severe competition of imported silver from France and Germany, the Belgian silversmiths petitioned for a change in the laws governing their work. As a result, 1868 to 1942 became a period of great liberalism: official silver standards were lowered to 900 and 800, no Hallmarking office assay was needed and, there was no registration of personal marks. As an unintended consequence of this liberalism, it is today difficult to identify Belgian silver from that period because each of the silversmiths and retailers used their personal assay marks.
Best,
Oel

Re: French Hallmarks - Need Help
Hi,
This is obviously the same mark with A 800.Meaning, it cannot be older than late 19th century.
``A BELGIAN SILVER FLATWARE SERVICE, stamped A800`` has been offered elsewhere.
What do we know about A 800?
What`s the coin in ``small sterling pieces``? (There seems to be a coin in the image).
Regards

Re: French Hallmarks - Need Help
I see no agreement with the Belgian silver Hallmarks.
Perhaps this is plated.
