Identify Maker on Silver Spoon?

Post by Mags »

Hello

I have had this spoon for years and it never occurred to me that it is silver until last night when a friend spotted the markings on the back!

I have tried finding information on the internet, but cannot find anything.

Please would anyone be able to identify the maker etc?

The markings say: PBB CAPE SILVER

Many thanks for any help.

Hi,
Welcome to the forum.
Is it possible to take better close up image of the marks ?
I downloaded the image and enlarged it but too blurred to see the marks.
Thank you.

Hi Mags,

Welcome to the Forum.

Your spoon is not silver, I'm afraid, but silver plated. During the latter years of the 19th century it became a popular marketing ploy by the Birmingham and Sheffield plating firms to give their products exotic sounding names. These trade names suggested that the product was made from silver produced from famous silver strikes of the time. There are dozens of names to be found, including, Bengal, Nevada, Brazilian, Sydney, Potosi, Virginian, Japanese, etc., etc.

As for who used the trade name 'Cape Silver', I can't help, but hopefully someone will be aware of the maker.

Hi Trev

Thank you for letting me know some of the history of the spoon.

I have been using it for years to baste roast potatoes etc and then putting it in the dishwasher, so perhaps its just as well it is not silver!

Many thanks.
