Help with identification of old faint marks, please.

Post by jillyjim »

Hello.
The marks below belong to a rose gold religious charm. It is very old. We have seen it and held it. But we only have images of the marks.
We would like to know what the marks represent, please.
.375 is for 9ct
We're guessing that it may be Irish but as always we really have no idea. All comments are welcome and thanks in advance.

Hello.
We've ruled out Irish.
Could these be perhaps Sheffield? marks, post 1854 when the value in decimals was added to the carat mark?

Hello salmoned.
Now that just shows me how ignorant I am.(LOL)
Egypt?
Your help will be greatly appreciated in identifying the 3 unknown to me marks in their cartouche, slamoned.
Or can you please guide me to a site where I can look up the Egyptian hallmarks?

They certainly look like Arabic markings to me and Egypt may well be the origin...from memory.....Best wishes, Mike.

Try as I might, can't see anything that would relate these marks to Egypt.

Although Hibernia and the date letter have been partially obscured by gouges from the crude rendering of the second heart, I do see marks that conform with those for Irish 9 carat gold.

The 1973 Hall-marking act mandates that the crown appear on all standards of British gold.
Since 1974 the Sheffield crown, used for over 200 years on sterling, was replaced with the rose townmark.

Hi Pat,
True, but Ireland gained its independence from Britain in 1922. British hallmarking regulations did not apply after that time.

Thank you for your opinions.
For what it's worth, this religious charm/pendant is definitely pre 1974 and in my opinion pre-1922.
