Help Dating French Hallmark

Post by kmegems »

Can anyone tell me when the 18K gold French Hallmark of an OWL sitting on a branch would have been used? The Hallmark is shown on this site under the heading "RE-MARK SECOND HAND GOODS" I'm not sure what this means. Does anyone know what "RE-MARK SECOND HAND GOODS means? Thanks http://www.925-1000.com/Ffrench_marks.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Hi,

I am not positive but it sounds to me like someone from france got the ring second hand and marked it to be more than 50% gold or less than 50% gold. Like a second hand dealer that put the stamp on there for quick reference.

Is there a line on both sides of the owl or only on the left side?

Bec
P.S. I am not an expert.

As I understand it, the mark was used on pieces that had come back onto the market with outdated local or foreign marks. It was used as a fresh guarantee for potential buyers, by a jeweler or auction house, after they had acquired great-granny's ring from you.

Regards, Tom
