Chilean Gold Ring

Post by janmayen »

I anyone able to tell me more about an engagement ring that I have inherited?

It was given by my Great Grandfather to my Great Grandmother on the occasion of their engagement sometime in the early 1900s. At the time they were living in South America, both on Tierra del Fuego, but one on the Argentine side and one on the Chilean side. They were later married in Punta Arenas. On that basis, I suspect the ring may have been made in Punta Arenas.

It has three marks on it. The 14 and 585 figures I understand refer to the gold quality, 14 carat. The third mark is like a stretched A although there is no clear cross bar to the A shape, and there may be a tiny nick in the centre making it look a little like a tiny bat symbol or possibly an arrow with a very large arrow head and tiny shaft.

Sorry, but the marks are far to tiny for me to succesfully photograph. Can anyone tell me what the third A shape symbol means?

Many thanks
.
