Can someone identify this maker? Possibly Corsican/French

Post by ThePrisoner »

I have an incomplete tea set inherited from my great grandmother who was Corsican and grew up in France. I have no clue who the maker is, but the set pieces are stamped with a "900", the bold letters "MVC" and a shield. This image is from the bottom of a teapot and it is the best image of the shield I have since most of the imprints are pretty worn. Thanks in advance,
Joaquin

Hi,
Welcome to the forum.
1. `MVC`` letters are engraved. Possibly owner`s initials but certainly not maker`s initials.
2. Fineness ``900`` (not seen in your image) indicates newer production, very late 19th century or later.
3. The mark is not French and the object cannot be attributed to France.
5. The image of the ``shield mark``is rather small. There are letters (numbers?) within it. Better close up might help.

Thanks for the help. Below is a zoom of the shield (I'm assuming it is a shield)- I still cannot make out the numbers/letters. This set was handed down through many generations in my family so it is very old and all the pieces are well used and worn, so this is the best example of the shield that is left. Thanks again and I appreciate any more input anyone may have.

Hi Joaquin,

Welcome to the Forum.

It's Colombian:

GH
0900
BOGOTA

We do have an ongoing topic for South American silverware, see:

http://www.925-1000.com/forum/viewtopic ... 38&t=35433

Unfortunately, just at the moment we are being held to ransom by Photobucket and it may be a little while before the images are restored.

Wow, that was fast Trev! Thank you very much. My great grandmother eventually migrated to Puerto Rico from Europe, but I would have never guessed the set was from Colombia (Although she may not have actually been there and therefore came across it elsewhere). I'm going to have to sleuth out more family history. Thanks again, you guys are pretty darn good!

Hi Joaquin,

Keep an eye on the South American topic, it should be back in shape in the next day or so.

Thanks, I appreciate it. It would be interesting (at least for me) to see all the different styles of that mark.
