What was this small glass box topped by a silver rack used for? It only has 1 poorly struck hallmark (shown here from both sides) but I’m certain it’s silver.

Morning Niceguy,
French hallmarks, Minerva on the outside. Believe the corners were clipped indicating a 900/1000 parts silver. Your looking at a bigorne anti-counterfeting mark opposite the Minerva. Will let somene else figure out the particular usage of this object.

Good call on the French mark! A clarification on French silver standards: Minerva in an octagonal reserve indicates 950 standard silver, NOT 900.
