What-is-it question CCIII

A silverplated item from 1906, just the sort of thing you would find rolling about in the back of an old cutlery drawer:

Probably around 2½" (6cm) in length.

What is it?

Hi JL,

No, nothing so exotic, much more a utilitarian item.

Hello Trev!
Maybe a device to clean a pipe?
Best regards!

Hi Krisztián,

A good guess, but no, not a pipe cleaner.

Hi,

To hang some wet small towels or napkins by the side points?

Hi Oel,

No, not a towel hanger. This is more food orientated and designed to prevent a widespread nuisance.

Hi Silverly,

No, it does not hold something as such (well, kinda does, but not in a long-term storage way). It's use is to prevent something happening.

I added this one to the mystery items because, as mentioned in the opening post, it is just the sort of thing found at the back of an old cutlery drawer, and its use would probably be unknown.

I love that one Silverly, but no, not a fly paper hanger.

Think refreshment!

Is it used to hang up an orange or a Lemon, with cinnamon, for the odour?

Hi Jörg,

No, not an air freshener.

Think hot beverages!

Hi Jörg,

That's close enough!
