What-is-it question CCVI
An item from 1878 that I'm sure will stump you all :))
I'm looking for the actual use for which the item was sold for.

What-is-it question CCVI
Re: What-is-it question CCVI
A cigar lighter?
Re: What-is-it question CCVI
That's what I would have said, we've had similar items on the forum before, but no, that's not what this item was sold for.

Re: What-is-it question CCVI
What it is sold for is not necessary what it is and it is a match box with a tinder cord

Sometimes the tinder cord is missing and then it is claimed to be visit card holder/note book with the pen missing. That is not the case.

Hi Qrt.S,
I'm afraid you are incorrect, the item is what it was sold for. Although it is similar in many respects to the pieces that you refer too, you would most definitely not want to light your cigar from this item.

HI Trev!
Hehhehee....Mind my saying but I don't I'm wrong and by the way I did not say that it is a cigar lighter but a match box with a tinder cord. A match box it is without any doubts and it seems to have a tinder cord as well. With that combination you can light whatever you need even a fuse in a dynamite or.

Re: What-is-it question CCVI
A mosquito fumigator?
Re: What-is-it question CCVI
Hi Amena,
I think that's close enough!
A Victorian version of the Georgian vinaigrette perhaps. Perry & Co.'s Pocket Disinfector with Klein's Patent.
Perry & Co. - London - 1878
I suspect if you lit a cigar with this device it would taste pretty foul!
Hi Qrt.S,
Yes, I think it would also be OK for dynamite fuses! :)) But an air freshener/fumigator was what it was sold for.

Vauuu! OK, you win Trev.. Nonetheless, it makes me wonder did it really work and what might have been the odor....I mean fragrance, red glowing cotton??? This object belongs undoubtedly to the series of more or less ridiculous objects from the late 19 century.
