Possible Silver Religious Artifact?

Post by grandmacollector1935 »

I've been unable to identify either what this is or what the hallmarks mean. I was thinking a christening cup, but no images or search strings related have shown anything like it. I haven't been able to identify the maker either. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

Hi,

Hopefully, mystery will be solved by members of the forum.Dimensions might help.
The maker is Storck & Sinsheimer, Hanau, pseudo marks.

Thank you for the help. Identifying Storck & Sinsheimer as the maker is a great start!

It measures 6.5" tall (16.51 cm) from top to the bottom. The diameter of the base is 2.5" (6.35 cm). When removed, the small cup measures 2.25" tall including the decorative top piece (5.72 cm).

Hello
Just an idea: Are the base and shaft leading up to the cup hollow, like a funnel? If so, this might be an invalid feeding cup.

Thank you for the idea. Unfortunately, it's closed off where the base meets the cylinder, and the base of the top cup is solid as well. There is no way for the liquid to pass through. It looks like liquid is added to the small cup on top and then inserted into the rest to be poured out the end (Baptism?).

It looks like a cigar lamp, a.k.a., smoker's lamp. They were filled with oil and kept burning on the table for the convenience of smokers. They came in all kinds of shapes, most just looking like a typical "Aladdin's lamp," but are often on the tall side, so the smoker didn't have to bend down to use it.
