Unknown Mappin and Webb item

I really need help identifying this Mappin and Webb piece. Hallmarked for Sheffield and 1912.

Hi, I believe it to be be a silver inkwell, should have a small glass liner for the ink.

I also thought so. I have several inkwells but have never seen one like this. Could find no example on the net. Local dealer says in 30 years he has never seen anything like it. Has ashes in it so was probably used as an ashtray at some time but I don't think that was the initial use.

I suppose another possibility is a cigar-lighter, having lost its burner.

Just for completeness, can you post an image of the marks?
