JOHN THOMASON

Spencer Street, Birmingham

.....There have been several other noticeable presentations to which the jewelers’ or silversmiths’ art has contributed the gift, but I can only mention a silver shield 15 or 16 inches high, resting on a stand of ebony and supported by three rifles. This is the “ Challenge Shield of the Royal Durban Rifles,” and has been manufactured by John Thomason, Spencer street, Birmingham, and is executed with the best possible taste. The work is not only a splendid specimen of artistic skill, but is also singularly appropriate in its design. The decoration is quite characteristic of the artist itself.

W.G. KEIGHT & Co.

32, Spencer Street, Birmingham

An example of the work and mark of W.G. Keight & Co.:

W.G.K - Birmingham - 1905

Established since at least 1883.

In c.1907 the firm was acquired by Alfred Henry Westwood, Francis Herbert Westwood and Bernard Scott.

Upon Scott's death on the 3rd January 1908, his place was taken by Edward Ruthven.

In 1910 W.G. Keight & Co. was acquired by John William Caldicott. Along with the premises, plant and goodwill, Caldicott's purchase included a varied assortment of hallmarked silver articles weighing about 35,000 ounces.

Caldicott, perhaps an asset stripper, auctioned off the stock in that same year, and disposed of the business to Davis, Blackham & Co. Ltd.

W.G. Keight entered his mark, 'W.G.K' contained within an oblong punch, with the Birmingham Assay Office in April 1883. W.G. Keight & Co. entered their mark, 'W.G.K' contained within an oblong punch, with the Birmingham Assay Office in September 1901.

W.G. Keight & Co. entered their mark, 'W.G' above 'K' above '& Co.' contained within a heraldic shield, with the London Assay Office on the 23rd November 1907.

N. ALLSOP

80, Spencer Street, Birmingham

The increasing fashion for waist buckles of a renaissance style of ornament (a class of work that has been principally supplied to us from France) has set our die sinkers thinking and working in order to get their share of orders, and they have succeeded admirably. A glance through the patterns of Mr. N. Allsop, 80, Spencer Street, shows some resources both in design and execution that will compete with the French both in price and quality.
