Richard Morton entered the following marks with the Sheffield Assay Office:

As Richard Morton & Co. (Richard Morton, Thomas Warris, John Winter, Samuel Roberts, John Elam, Thomas Sattle, John Eyre, and Nathaniel Smith), entered on the 30th September 1773

Image
Entered on the 13th July 1780

Entered on the 12th February 1781

The earliest record we have of those who joined Morton and others is much later than "about 1765," for it is found in the Assay Office Register of 1773. In that year a mark for silver was entered by Richard Morton, John Winter, Samuel Roberts, Thomas Warris, John Elam, Thomas Settle, John Eyre, and Nathaniel Smith. Winter’s presence in this firm explains the fact that when, in 1779, presenting to the Cutlers’ Company “an elegant” gilt silver cup bearing the stamp "R. Morton & Co., fecerunt," he described it as "of his own manufacture." Its date letter is 1776.

Besides being a member of this firm and engaged in the Parsons candlestick factory, Winter had a third string to his bow and Roberts a second, for on the same day as the entry of the previous mark, there was also registered another by Samuel Roberts, John Elam, Thomas Settle, John Eyre, and Nathaniel Smith. The address given in both cases was Brinsworth Orchard, or as it is elsewhere described, "near Fargate." Thus here were two contiguous firms, the one trading as Richard Morton Co. and the other as Roberts, Elam, Winter & Co., and while Morton was the principal partner of the one, Roberts dominated the other. In 1780, Settle (with Warris) and Morton, at the old address registered separate marks.

In 1793 there was a further re-arrangement, including new men, when Joseph Wilson, who has been mentioned (page 40), took the lead, the mark registered being But death soon ended this and the survivors were scattered. In I781 Roberts, with John Eyre, had gone off to Union Street to found the firm of Roberts, Eyre, Beldon & Co. In 1787 both of the Fargate firms—Richard Morton & Co. and Roberts, Elam, Winter & Co.have disappeared, Roberts, Eyre, Beldon & Co. succeeding the latter.

John Batt acquired the business of George Cutts & Sons c.1890.

JOHN BATT (GEORGE CUTTS & SONS), MANUFACTURER OF ELECTRO-PLATED GOODS, PARK WORKS, BROAD STREET, SHEFFIELD

This extensive and important business was founded in the year 1845 in Arundel Street, removing thence to Cambridge Street in 1878. Mr. John Batt successfully carried on the business until his death in 1889, when his sons undertook the management of the firm, purchased the property and business of Messrs. Cutts & Sons, and removed to the premises now occupied, and continue the business in the old firm-name and under their own personal management. The Park Works in Broad Street form commodious and well-situated headquarters for this large industry. They cover a considerable space of ground, and have a valuable equipment of the most effective modern plant. On the first floor of the premises there are spacious offices and a large show-room, the latter containing a fine display of the firm’s productions in numerous show-cases. This stock fully represents Mr. Batt’s manufactures, and is both varied and extensive. It embraces every description of choice silver and electro-plated goods, Britannia-metal ware, &c., in a great variety of new and artistic designs, and includes a wide range of selection in such standard articles as tea and coffee services, waiters, dishes and dish covers, fruit and flower stands, liqueur frames, biscuit and marmalade receptacles, cake baskets, fish carvers, fish eaters, dessert knives and forks, pickle forks, butter knives, melon carvers, sugar sifters, and cutlery generally, and a special line of dessert services, the designs of which are unique, being the property of this firm exclusively.

All the above-named goods are manufactured on the premises, every process being carried out under the most favourable conditions, from the melting and moulding of the raw material to the final polishing of the finished articles. Upwards of one hundred hands are employed at this establishment, and the whole of the manufacture comes under the immediate supervision of Messrs. Batt, whose knowledge of the trade is exhaustive and thoroughly practical. The productions of this firm (all the various styles of which are splendidly illustrated in their large trade catalogue) enjoy a high reputation for sound quality, beauty and novelty of design, and excellence of finish. These favourable characteristics are very carefully maintained, and, in addition to doing a large and increasing home trade, the house is developing an important export business, through the medium of shippers, to Australia, Canada, and other markets. The business in all its departments is directed with marked ability and energy. There is a London office and show-room at 157, Aldersgate Street, E.C. This branch exhibits a representative stock of goods, for the special convenience of metropolitan buyers, and is well managed by the firm’s London representative, Mr. Horace Batt, who has been in the trade for nearly twenty years.

MESSRS. JOHN BATT & CO., LIMITED, 14, SYCAMORE STREET, SHEFFIELD

The ancient fame of Sheffield plate - now an object of special consideration to amateurs and collectors–survives on an ampler scale in the renown of this city's multifarious productions in all branches of the silversmith's art and of the more modem craft of electro-plating. It is interesting to meet with a firm whose annals date back to the early days of the last mentioned industry, and whose name is at the same time intimately associated with the progress of general silversmith's work and cutlery manufacture in Sheffield during nearly three quarters of a century past. Such a firm is that of Messrs. John Batt & Co., Limited, old-established, widely known, and identified with a standard of manufacture which is regarded with confidence by both home and export buyers. It was in 1845 that the now extensive business carried on at 14, Sycamore Street, Sheffield, was founded by Mr. John Batt. The original family is still represented in the administration, which, since March 26th, 1896, has been conducted under a limited liability constitution, with a directorate consisting at the present time of Mr. William Sykes (chairman), Mr. Frederick Edmund Batt (managing director), Mr. Thomas Wilkinson Willis, and Mr. Bernard Bagshaw Batt. By this governing body the enterprising policy of the house has been actively continued, and its reputation for quality of product and advancement of method has never stood higher than during the period that has elapsed since the incorporation. The works in Sycamore Street have, in accordance with the rule of the house at all times, been kept thoroughly up-to-date in the details of their equipment. With their staff of 100 highly trained and skilful workers, they rank as one of the best organised establishments of the kind and size in Sheffield. Here, from time to time, various practical improvements, new processes, etc., have been introduced, which have had no small effect in promoting the interests of the concern, and strengthening the position of its products in the market. We may note in this connection that the firm of John Batt was the originator of the method of " bolstering " German silver blades and forks without soldering–an improvement which met at once with marked favour, and has continued in general approval. A notable feature of the present company's operations is the wide range of work turned out. Few houses produce a greater variety of goods, all three branches of sterling silver, electro-plate, and cutlery being fully represented in so far as articles for table use and ornament are concerned. Spoons and forks are a leading speciality ; and along with these there is a varied output of table cutlery, entree dishes, cruets, trays, waiters, tea and coffee services, flower stands, jelly dishes, and, in short, every description of sterling silver and electro-plated table ware. Artistic ideals are pursued in the matter of design, with respect to which the company can be credited with many elegant and tasteful conceptions ; while the practical efficiency at command in the works, and the careful supervision exercised in every department, are evidenced in the excellence of workmanship and finish for which even the lower-priced articles of this firm's manufacture have always been favourably known in the trade. Messrs. John Batt & Co., Limited, in the course of a long record of activity, have gradually extended their business relations to all the three great divisions of our national commerce–home, colonial, and foreign. Their home trade has been a substantial one from the first, and remains to this day their chief interest ; but export business has, none the less, received a due share of attention, and the successful cultivation of several important oversea markets is demonstrated in the connections that have been formed and steadily built up in Australia, New Zealand, India, and South Africa. The company has London offices and show-rooms conveniently situated, at 53, New Broad Street, E.C. It may be added that Mr. William Sykes (the chairman) is managing director of Messrs. John Smiths, proprietors of the well-known Tadcaster Brewery Co., Limited, Tadcaster ; while Mr. T. W. Willis is a director of Messrs. Sanderson Brothers & Newbould. Limited, Sheffield. Telegrams : " Bat, Sheffield." Telephone : 2692
