The maker's mark is likely to be that of Samuel Roberts & Co. (S. Roberts, Smith & Co.), Eyre Street, Sheffield.

JOSEPH OLDALE

Sheffield

REMARKABLE FEAT OF A MAGNA CHARTA ASSOCIATION

The Magna Charta Association, which Dr Kenealy asserts will shortly reform the Constitution, has to-day asserted its championship of injured innocence for the first time under most extraordinary circumstances. The facts in brief are that in 1857 Joseph Oldale, a Sheffield silversmith, obtained Baron Pollock's judgment in the Court of Common Pleas declaring him to be the rightful owner of certain houses and lands at Millhouses, near Sheffield, of the value of £50,000. Oldale attempted to take possession, and levied a distress on one of the tenants, but he was mulcted for illegal restraint. He declined to pay, was imprisoned, then made bankrupt, and all his efforts since have been fruitless, owing, he alleges, to the supineness of his lawyers. Now, however, he has put the matter into the hands of the local branch of the Magna Charta Association, which has took forcible possession of the largest house and all the land. Later, however the tenant in possession was unceremoniously and riotously ejected by a large body of men but the association intend proceeding further on behalf of the rightful heir. The result is awaited with much excited curiosity.

There is a family connection to the firm of Ellin & Oldale, table-knife makers, located between the top of Eyre Street and Eyre Lane, next to Roberts & Cadman's silver-plating works.
