Every Londoner knows Mr. Lambert, of Coventry Street, the silversmith, who has a tine collection of antique ware, and a fine taste in its selection. The amateur of Church Plate, for example, will find much to interest him here. He may see some admirable examples of ancient designs, no less than of modern workmanship. Lambert's is one of the few London silversmiths whose shop-window is sure to arrest the attention of the passer-by. And we doubt not that Mr. Lambert would welcome him within, if he be curious in such matters as Corporation maces and plate, loving-cups (have not Americans introduced this fashion at their feasts ?), patens, cruets, chalices, silver christening basins, and so on.

It is not generally known, that, under the provisions of its ancient charter, the Governor and Corporation of the Bank of England are obliged not only to purchase at the fair value any precious metals tendered to them , but also to take charge of any gold or silver, in ingots or plate, that may be brought to them for safekeeping. From time to time plate chests have been deposited with this view in the vaults of the Bank, and many of them have been there so long that they are actually rotting away. On a recent occasion the servants of the Bank discovered a chest, which, on being moved, literacy fell to pieces. On examining the contents a quantity of massive plate was discovered of the period of Charles II . This circumstance might not in itself be very interesting, but that there was found with the plate a parcel, which proved to be a bundle of old love-letters, carefully arranged according to their dates. An inspection of them revealed a correspondence of a tender and romantic description carried on during the period of the Restoration. The name of the writer was found to be Berners, and, after considerable search among the archives of the institution, it was found that a family of that name had been connected with the bank about the time in question. Acting upon this clue, the directors prosecuted their enquiry, and being satisfied that a gentleman of the same name, now living, is the lineal representative of the owner of the plate and the love-letters, both have been handed to him. The plate has been sent to Messrs. Lambert, the celebrated silversmiths of Coventry-street, London, to be cleaned, and the newly-discovered owner has permitted it to be shown to anyone interested in plate of the period. The love-letters are not, however, on view.

HAVERFORDWEST

The annual council meeting was held at twelve noon on Monday, Mr. Samuel Thomas (mayor) in the chair; all the members were present. Mr Thomas, the retiring mayor, reviewed the work of the past year, and particularly referred to the drainage scheme and supplementary water supply, both of which had been matured during the past year and considerably advanced. Mr. John James proposed, and Alderman Eaton Evans seconded, the nomination of Mr. T. Baker, sen., as mayor for the ensuing year. No other candidate being proposed, Mr. Baker was declared elected. Mr. E. H. Ellis was elected sheriff. Mr. Baker, the newly-elected mayor, then thanked the members for electing him to the honourable position he then occupied. Mr. John James moved and Mr. Thomas James seconded in a complimentary manner a hearty vote of thanks to the ex-mayor for the very efficient and impartial manner he had discharged his duties during the past year. The various committees were elected and the quarterly and monthly meetings fixed. Mr. S. Thomas, the ex-mayor, moved, and it was unanimously adopted, "that the thanks of the Corporation be tendered to Colonel Lambert, goldsmith to the Queen, for his kindness in repairing and restoring the maces; also for the handsome case he had presented and returned them in." The meeting was then adjourned until Wednesday, at seven p.m.

DARING ACT OF SWINDLING

We have just received intelligence of a most extraordinary and daring act of swindling committed on the respectable goldsmiths and jewellers, Messrs. Lambert and Hawley, 11 and 12 Coventry-street. On Wednesday a well dressed fashionable looking man called at the shop, and directed an immense quantity of jewellery, to the amount of about £500, to be put up and made a parcel of and that one of the clerks should accompany him to the Bishop of London, where payment would be made, and which was accordingly done. On arriving at the Bishop's the gentleman inquired for the secretary of his lordship, who was from home; but the gentleman was requested to walk in, and to wait the return of the secretary, which he did. And he soon afterwards, in the presence of the clerk, opened the packet and examined all the articles very carefully, and then made an observation that he had omitted to order some rings, which he begged the clerk to return to the shop for, and that he would wait the clerk's return. The clerk was no sooner gone than the gentleman rang the bell, and told the servant he would go out and soon return to see the secretary, as he had some visits to make in the neighbourhood. He accordingly did so, but neither the gentleman or the parcel have ever since been heard of, and the unfortunate clerk, on arriving with the rings was horrified to find the gentleman, as well as the parcel, had disappeared.
