Shown on the left of this illustration is the premises of Thomas Stone, and later that Francis E. Stone, at 36, High Street, Exeter:
This illustration was published in 1879, by which time the business was in the hands of Benjamin W. Nix.

This image is from September 1937. The shop was not to be in place for long, for it was destroyed in an air raid in 1940.
