American Silver Workers Deported from the Dominion of Canada

Toronto, Can., Feb. 4.—On the 30th ult. three employes of the Toronto Silver Plate Co. were deported to the United States, from which country they had been brought by the company in contravention of the provisions of the Alien Labor law. The company claim to have acted in good faith and to have been unaware that they were breaking the law in engaging American citizens.

Recent investigations in Toronto by Officer Williams, a Dominion official appointed to execute the law, have developed a rather anomalous condition of things. As in another case, he was powerless to order deportation because the workmen, though engaged in New York, were not American citizens.

Artistic Silver Inkstand Made by a Canadian Firm for the S. S. “Harmonic."

Image

The sterling silver ornamental inkstand shown on the front cover is a fine example of silversmith’s art, and was the produced by a Canadian firm, the Toronto Silver Plate Co. The piece, which was presented to the S. S. Harmonic, is in the shape of a primitive Viking hull with a cabin in the rear.

The body of the boat is finely shaped and trimmed with Acanthus scrolls richly embossed so as to come as nearly as possible to the decoration used by the early users of this style of craft. The oars (which were the only means of propulsion in the early days) are shown from port holes on each side of the piece ; these are shown with the points of the oars dipping water so as to show the boat making progress, the brow is a massive scroll and the stern finely shaped so as to balance evenly.

The cabin shows a panel on either side having an engraving in one of the Harmonic as she appeared leaving Collingwood on her initial trip, and the opposite panel left plain for the presentation inscription, the uprights or corner pieces of the cabin are plain flute and finished bright. At the apex of cabin is placed the symbolic figure of father Neptune holding a trident. The shield on either side of the body is enriched by Maple Leaves richly chased with a flute encircling them.

Upon what might be termed the foot are placed the ink wells, one on each side, while under both bow and stern are shown Mermaids in happy mood, playing double lutes and supporting the boat. The border of the foot around the ink wells are richly chased reeds placed in such a manner as to produce a very pleasing effect.

The Plynth is shaped to match the foot of the ink stand and is finished in mahogany to match the table upon which it rests.

This entire piece is very massive and is finished in French gray with the pillars of the cabin and the oars of the boat finished bright in contrast. The view of the boat from the obverse side is entirely the same as the one shown in the illustration, with the exception of the figure, which will
show a back view.
