The above are perhaps to be identified with Thomas Field, noted as working as a Watchmaker in Bond Street in 1792, and/or a W. Field, working as a Watchmaker, at 15, James Street, in 1818.

EDWIN ROUTLEY

Bridge Street, Bath

Impudent Theft of Watches – Recently a young man entered the shop of Edwin Routley, Bridge Street, Bath, whilst the assistants were at dinner, and asked him some question about a clock. This necessitated his going outside, and during the half-minute he was so engaged, a second man stepped in and seized twenty-eight gold watches valued at £240. Seeing him rush out, Mr. Routley concluded what had happened, and unsuccessfully tried to stop him. Raising an alarm, the thief was ultimately caught with the watches in his possession. The other man was also apprehended, and both committed for trial.

WILLIAM BOTTLE & JEREMIAH WILLSHER

A taper box assayed and hallmarked at London in 1798.

The partnership entered their mark with the London Assay Office on the 27th October 1796, the mark being entered by Fendall Rushforth, the former Assayer, then Warden at Goldsmiths' Hall, under Power of Attorney. The partnership was presumably over by the 6th March 1800, when William Bottle entered his mark alone.

Jeremiah Willsher served his apprenticeship under Thomas Howell of Bath (2nd August 1788 for seven years on payment of £42).

Member avondale16 kindly supplied the following information:

John James Stevens born 1790 & buried in March 1821. According to my research he was a Watchmaker living in Kingsmead Street between 1813 until his death. Family history says that he had a Jewellers shop on Pulteney Bridge & that he & one of his sons died as a result of a fire in the shop.

James Bullock is perhaps to be identified with others with the same surname and same trades that were in business at Bath, eg. Grace Bullock, William Bullock, Thomas Bullock, and Zephanian Bullock.

SHORTO

Salisbury

At Bath, Mrs Shorto; and, on the 20th, Mr. Shorto, her husband, an eminent silversmith and cutler, of Salisbury. Their remains were deposited, on the 23rd, in one grave, in St. Edmund's church-yard. During the solemnization of the funeral service, their infant son, three weeks old, was baptized in the church; and, on the whole, a most affecting scene was presented to a sympathizing congregation. They were both in perfect health a few days before.

This may be the business of Thomas Harris, who entered two marks 'T·H' contained within an oblong punch with clipped corners, with the London Assay Office on the 28th January 1805.

It appears that by 1848 the business was styled under the name of John Dafter Harris.
